Emotional Regulation

The ability to notice, name and shape one's emotional response.

Emotional regulation is the capacity to notice an emotional state, understand it, and choose a response rather than react automatically.

It is the practical foundation of most SEL programs. It does not mean suppressing emotions; it means working with them.

Examples

  • Naming an emotion out loud
  • Using the RULER Meta-Moment
  • A grounding breath before responding
