About the program

SEE Learning is a comprehensive social, emotional, and ethical learning program developed by Emory University. It combines SEL with the science of compassion, drawing on a trauma-informed, resilience-focused approach as well as systems thinking.

The program builds mindfulness and attention, compassion for oneself and others, resilience, systems thinking, and the capacity to act ethically within a global community. SEE Learning provides ready-made lessons and a conceptual framework for training educators; the university reports the existence of an international implementation and training network.

Evidence base

The program is included in the CASEL Program Guide with SELect status.

An evaluation of the program based on a quasi-experimental study (685 students in grades 4–5) showed statistically significant improvements in perspective-taking skills, empathic concern (compassion for others), self-compassion, intrinsic prosocial motivation, and academic goal-setting compared with the control group. Perceived classroom support declined in both groups, but the decline was significantly smaller in the group that completed the program.

Cost

A free, self-paced SEE 101 course (about 3 hours); a downloadable curriculum; additional workshops and facilitator certification; support from Emory University or a local affiliate organization.
